Job Description:

ELM is seeking Damage Prevention Liaisons to work in the Helena, MT area.  As a Damage Prevention Liaison, your primary responsibility will be damage prevention through education, standbys, onsite monitoring and preventative patrolling.  You will contact excavators to determine whether standby service is needed and then provide standby service while excavation takes place.  Standby service will consist of monitoring the excavator’s process and correctly, safely, and efficiently locate underground utilities when needed. This will require that you manage your own daily route and schedule within certain parameters, and that you are committed to the high quality and accuracy of your work to ensure that clients and contractors can operate in complete safety, with full knowledge of the location of any underground utility lines they may encounter.
Your specific duties in this role will include:

  • Receive notifications through tag reports, referrals from ELM or NWE, contractor request, or patrol.
  • Prioritize notifications based on set criteria:
    • Intermediate Pressure (IP) lines and the distribution lines.
    • Water and Sewer
    • Major infrastructure (bore, phone, cable tv replacements)
    • Risk management of third party contractors
  • Searching for underground utilities and accurately marking the location
  • Completing all necessary paperwork
  • Maintaining daily contact with utility managers, crews, homeowners, and contractors discussing locate issues
  • Reading and understanding utility-provided maps to assist in identification of underground utilities
  • Ensuring that clients and contractors suffer no damages or injuries due to mis-located utilities
  • Responding to emergency calls in a timely manner



Job Requirements:

We are looking for Damage Prevention Liaisons who combine a solid work ethic and the ability to self-manage with a firm commitment to safety. You must also be comfortable working in an outdoor setting, walking significant distances each day in all types of weather, and dealing with all manner of field hazards. It is also important that you have exceptional verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, and that you are able to interact with people in a friendly and professional manner.
Specific qualifications for the position include:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles a day in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and to bend/stoop/kneel/crawl
  • Valid driver’s license with a good motor vehicle record
  • Ability to efficiently manage your daily schedule
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills
  • Flexibility and temperament to adapt to sudden challenges and changing work conditions
  • Willingness to change schedule at short notice to respond to emergency calls
  • Availability for weekend on-call duty, as required
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and random drug screens
  • Knowledge of underground utility construction and your assigned geographic region, preferred
  • Computer proficiency and the ability to use GPS/mapping systems, preferred
  • Prior locating or surveying experience, a plus
  • Experience scheduling your own work on a daily basis, a plus
  • Ability to read and decipher maps, a plus
  • Experience in delivery or route driving involving production quotas, a plus
